Charles Lefranc history

Charles Lefranc is a central name in research into Almaden and the Santa Clara Valley’s wine heritage. Historical sources also use the spellings LeFranc and Le Franc.

A name across different sources

Spelling can change between a historical document, a later transcription and a modern catalog. Searching Charles Lefranc, Charles LeFranc and Charles Le Franc can open different paths into the same research subject. A matching surname by itself does not establish that two records concern the same person.

Almaden and the Masson connection

The National Park Service’s Paul Masson Mountain Winery account places Lefranc within the French immigrant wine community of the Santa Clara Valley and connects his family and wine business with Paul Masson. California’s Almaden Vineyards landmark record offers another public starting point.

Following people through records

Viniside’s research examines family relationships, property descriptions, business activity and the language of surviving records. Thomas Brenner keeps uncertain readings and unresolved connections visible in the working dossier rather than turning a plausible association into a settled fact.
